Scenic Iowa

I wanted to post this photo as I really liked the shot.  It is unfortunate that I only had my phone camera, as the Iowa scenery is wonderful.

If you look really closely, you can see Dani Jo playing in the mud, wearing her new "hoggin' boots".

We did find several small grey morels near this spot.

Trip To Iowa

John, Dani Jo and I decided to make a short trip to Iowa to visit my brother Pat and his family.  We also wanted to try and get out to find some of the abundant morels of southern Iowa.  The spring has been decidedly colder than usual, but we thought we'd try anyway.

We checked a few of Pat's best spots yesterday, and only found a couple smaller yellow morels and a few handfuls of small grey morels.  Turns out that Becky, my sister-in-law is an expert mushroom hunter and she spotted the grove of small greys that made the difference between a decent day and a pretty lousy one.

I was amazed at the abundance of exceptional morel territory in that wonderful area of Iowa.

First Look

Our first real venture out foraging this spring.  Went to our best fiddlehead spot, and we were too early.  Those tender shoots were still buried deep in the plants.

For those interested in finding fiddleheads early in the year, here is what they look like.  You're actually looking at last-year's foliage; all dried up and brown.
